Soap 101. 🧼 Soap is only actually SOAP if it is made with sodium hydroxide (lye) – or sodium potassium, in the case of liquid soap. When the lye is mixed with healthful oils and fats, they go through a chemical process known as saponification. What is left over after this process is good old soap and some glycerin, which is highly prized for its moisturizing qualities. (the FDA has actually ruled that commercial soap makers cannot use the term “soap” unless it meets the above criteria).
Well then. What have you actually been buying and using for all these years from your local grocery or drug store? The bars of “soap” that you thought you were using to cleanse your body are actually concoctions of many dangerous chemicals, 🤢 made as cheaply as possible to produce the greatest profit $$$ , with no thought whatsoever about the cumulative effects on the consumers health. #truthnugget
Toxic chemicals commonly found in commercial cleansing products.
Triclosan: this is actually a pesticide. Yep. Really. It is used by many manufacturers in their product in order to claim it as “antibacterial”. It is TERRIBLE for the environment and partially to blame for resistance to many bacteria. It is also a known endocrine disrupter. Check your shelves and be sure you aren’t using ANY products that contain this ingredient.
Sodium Laurel Sulfate (SLS) is another chemical agent used in many household cleansers and “soaps”. It is a known carcinogen and hormone disrupter and is easily absorbed into the skin.
Formaldehyde and other chemicals that may release formaldehyde (such as diazolidinyl urea) are very common in commercial soaps. It can weaken the immune system and contribute to a myriad of health issues, most of which would never be attributed to something as seemingly innocuous as the soap you’re using.
Dioxane, even as a sometime “unintended by-product” is a known carcinogen and highly toxic.
Diethanolamine (DEA) & ETHANOLAMINE COMPOUNDS (MEA, DEA, TEA AND OTHERS) are KNOWN carcinogens, specifically affecting the liver and kidneys. Additionally, unborn babies may be affected as the chemical causes disruptions in how much choline (an essential nutrient for the brain development of a fetus) a pregnant woman may be able to absorb.
Parabens are commonly used as preservatives in many products to increase their shelf life. They are known hormone disrupters and can affect reproduction, birth outcome and increase the risk of cancer.
PEG-6 in “small amounts is thought to be safe”, despite links to breast cancer, due to its effects on hormones.
Fragrances, “natural” or otherwise, can hide a TON of chemical additives and is completely unregulated and acceptable in most all commercial products. Love that super “strawberry” aroma? It is NOT natural OR healthful and may be incredibly harmful to your health. SO not worth it.
There ARE many natural and healthful alternatives available so do your research, know your ingredients, and buy from a trusted source. 😁
